Terminology Tuesday: Episodic Season

It’s August!

It’s a great time for actors to start focusing on getting their start in TV. Whereas pilot season can be a bit more competitive, episodic season is most likely when you’ll be going in for (and booking!) that first co-star role. traditionally means… 𝕙𝕒𝕡𝕡𝕪 𝕖𝕡𝕚𝕤𝕠𝕕𝕚𝕔 𝕤𝕖𝕒𝕤𝕠𝕟!!!

Once pilots have received their pickups and series have received their rewnewal notices, writers go back to work. Typically, casting goes back to work a month or so after the writers do in order to start casting for the next season.

Episodic season typically starts in August (or even July in many cases) through November. It can be a very hectic time for casting and a very opportunistic time for actors.

So what can you do to prepare for a successful episodic season?

A lot, actually! 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘢 𝘧𝘦𝘸 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘧𝘢𝘷𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴:

1️⃣ Make sure your materials are top-notch. Narrow down your headshots. Make sure your reel is an accurate representation of your ability.

2️⃣ Get back in (or continue) class. If you’re looking for a class, now is a great time to get back in an auditioning or self/taping class.

3️⃣ Research, research, research. Read the trades. Figure out what shows are shooting locally to you. Target those casting offices first.

4️⃣ Perfect your self tape setup. We’re still in the land of self-taping for the long haul. You are your own producer + director. Make sure your setup is setting yourself up for success.

5️⃣ Make sure you’re in the right mindset. Value the growth you’ve made so far and take each “setback” as a learning opportunity.

6️⃣ Reward yourself. Give yourself credit for each audition, pin, booking, words of praise etc. Each win should be celebrated (and notated!) Write down your wins and see how far you’ve come.
