If you missed our @TheCastingDirectorsCut webinar on Friday, we’re going to go ahead and start with a now-infamous quote by the incomparable @somethinglikemike.
“Treat us like you’d treat your gym. How often do you want to hear from your gym? If it’s an amazing 50% membership deal, GREAT! Other than that, you don’t really want to hear from your gym.”
So, basically, THAT, but let’s dive a little deeper.
How often are you “updating” casting directors? Every week? Every month?
The key, once again, is to be intentional and mindful of your time and of ours.
Thinking of emailing everyone that you finally finished a feature-length script you’ve been working on for 5 years? That’s amazing! And definitely deserves some Door-Dashed donuts. But that’s probably not something we need to know, especially since it has nothing to do with acting.
Resist the urge to update us before you have a career-changing update. Because updating us once you do will 𝕙𝕒𝕧𝕖 𝕞𝕠𝕣𝕖 𝕥𝕣𝕒𝕔𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟.
The key to having “communication access” is to nurture and be respectful of that relationship.
We love actors. We really do.
𝔹𝕦𝕥 𝕪𝕠𝕦 𝕒𝕣𝕖 𝕟𝕠𝕥 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕠𝕟𝕝𝕪 𝕒𝕔𝕥𝕠𝕣.
We get more postcards, letters, emails, packages than you could imagine. Here are some basic do’s & don’t to help you stand out:
DON’T send lengthy newsletters about baking cookies on your family farm in Iowa, etc.
DON’T send postcards/mailers to every person in a casting office. It doesn’t make sense, it’s a waste of paper, and only one person needs that information.
DON’T send more than one update every 3 months (potentially sooner if it’s a BIG, life-changing update)
DON’T follow up if you don’t hear back from us. We need to prioritize work and getting more emails only stresses us out further.
DO make sure you send your materials with your email!
DO add a headshot to your signature (this is an easy addition—takes up little space, and is a quick way to jog our memory).
DO be intentional, to the point, and PERSONAL in your update.
DO properly address the mail/email — double-check name spelling!
